How to Write an Abortion Essay

Abortion Essay: Essay Plan and Tips

There are several medical practices that have drawn criticism from various quarters, such as abortion, stem cell research, euthanasia, testing on animals etc. This post deals with an abortion essay. Here’s a step-by-step plan on writing this essay from an academic point of view:

- Define the issue: What is abortion? How long has it been around for? What is its history in the area referred to you essay and what parallels and counterpoints are there in similar or divergent social structures? For instance, the historic Roe vs. Wade judgement in the United States is perhaps the most oft-cited law context of abortion.

- Define the groups: Broadly there are two groups — pro-life and pro-choice. Within them, you must understand the dominant or representative view of the medical community, of women, of single mothers, of rape victims, of the Church, of present and past governments, of the courts, of those brought up in foster homes, of families and so on.

- Understand the arguments: Once you have identified the groups, understanding the various viewpoints for the abortion essay becomes easier. Every person is advancing a view from his or her own situation or experience and is right in his or her own way. For instance, one sample essay view is that a woman who gives birth to child that she doesn’t want will not give it the care and love it needs, so it makes sense to terminate the pregnancy. Moreover, in countries where abortion is illegal, it’s carried out by quacks using unsanitised instruments that often cause the mother grievous harm. The religious view is that abortion is akin to ending an innocent person’s life and hence no less than murder. Alternatively, you could conduct a sampling survey among doctors, students, or residents in an area to judge attitudes towards abortion

- Get the facts: As you will notice when you study the opinions of various sub-groups, a lot of it just hot air i.e. unsubstantiated opinions. That may acceptable for talk shows and interviews but it does not make for a great abortion essay. So pull all the data you can about abortions such as how many are performed, the risks involved, the percentage of malpractices and patient fatalities, social acceptance etc. You should be able the support the essay’s thesis statement with more than just what XYZ person thinks. However, you can include case studies such as the experience of a would-be-mother who decided to terminate her pregnancy or perhaps wanted to terminate it but then changed her mind, clearly mentioning the factors that influenced her decision such as the prospects for financial support and child-care assistance. Approach the task like an argumentative essay.

- It’s not about you: Whatever side of the debate you are on, don’t mention it unless specifically asked. Since this is an issue on which both sides are sharply divided it becomes all the more important to maintain objectivity in this essay. Don’t just jump in worth your two pence in the abortion essay about whether abortion is ethical or not.
