The essay must study the problem from all aspects. It’s all very well to say that global warming should be reduced but you must evaluate what the various stakeholders stand or stood to lose in the process. This places the writer in a better position to understand why the problem unfolded the way it did.
The reason I insisted on watching the documentary for writing the global warming essay is because it was the right mix of facts and emotional appeals. A frequent criticism of environmentalists is that while their goals are noble their methods are not practical. For suggesting extreme measures one first has to convince the audience of the importance of the issue. Facts help build the backbone of the essay. And then you can use them to launch your argument or thesis. Be sure to get the facts from an authoritative source, such as the United Nations or the UK government’s Department for or Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
A tip for the essay to try to link it to something the reader can relate to. For instance an essay for the layman could focus on appliances that save energy or the merits of buying a hybrid car.
