In a world where each country’s resources are beginning to seem limited, the issue of immigration becomes a topic of debate. An immigration essay is therefore a means to explore the various facets of a highly controversial policy element and to perhaps even suggest alternative approaches.
Some sample essay topics are:

The ideal strategy for such an essay is to move from general to specific. Therefore, in the introduction, give a brief definition of immigration. Then relate it to the context of the immigration essay. For instance, for the essay on “From Tandoori Chicken to Tortilla Chips: Immigration and the Western Palate”, a sample introduction can be, “Immigration refers to the act of settling in a foreign country, usually for the purpose of work. With the increased migration of people from diverse cultures to the West, it is but natural that the cuisine native to the immigrants should become an integral part of the Western palate. Immigrants cook their native food out of habit and necessity; soon it becomes a profitable venture for them to serve to the country’s original citizens.”
Then further develop the point with examples. For instance, after the above introduction one could write “This expansion of cuisines available is not a one way process. In other words, while the native cuisine of the immigrants influences the local cuisine, it also works the other way. Take the case of Britain’s fascination with Chicken Curry, an Indian dish so popular that it is often referred to as Britain’s national dish. Now English food is rather bland, while Indian cuisine prides itself on the use of spices. In order to project itself as a counterpoint to English cuisine, Indian food in Britain is often more spicy than it would be in India. Its USP is it’s ‘hotness’ or spiciness, and it goes all out to promote it.”
Similarly, elaborate three or four other points in the immigration essay. Make sure that each point follows the other in a coherent manner. For instance the above point could be followed by a brief discussion of the benefits of this co-influence of cuisines.
In the conclusion, make a statement that summarises the essay’s main point, such as, “Hence while immigration has introduced diversity in the Western palate, the native cuisine of the immigrants has also been transformed in the process and…” Don’t mention anything new in the conclusion; it will make the essay seem too digressive.
