Process Analysis Essay: A How-To Guide
How to Write A Clear Process Analysis Essay
A process analysis essay is like a how-to guide. It tells the readers how to do a certain task or explains how something works.
Since these type of essays aim to instruct the reader or to satisfy them with a sufficient explanation its best to break it down into simple steps. How much you simplify the explanation depends on the profile of the reader. If you are writing a process analysis essay on cloning techniques aimed at academicians then you can use a lot more jargon than in an essay on gardening aimed at beginners. This also determines the tone of your essay; while an essay on the former topic is expected to have an objective tone, the tone of the latter can be more breezy and approachable.
Most of the blog posts here are akin to process analysis essays. They break down the seemingly complex task of essay writing into simple steps. And they mention the steps in chronological order; i.e. tips on conclusion are given after the tips on writing an introduction.
The best analogy of a process analysis essay is a cooking recipe. You first mention the ingredients or tools involved and their uses. Then you clearly describe each step required to prepare a dish and the duration of that step. You can point out the common errors, misconceptions and false warnings to watch out for. In addition, you mention how the reader can identify that the steps are being followed correctly; for instance “the onions will be ready to take off the pan when they take on a light golden-brown tinge”. Moreover, suggestions on how to remedy mistakes would be excellent, like “if you add too much salt then you can add more of the other ingredients or sugar to neutralize it”.
Students writing such essays often omit the definition of important terms. For instance, a mediocre essay on gardening will merely advise the reader to use a garden hoe frequently. A good essay will tell the reader what a hoe is, what it is used for, how frequently to use it, the manner of use it in, the ideal hoe length and techniques to ensure that a hoe can be used with the least hassle.
Occasionally, the writer’s judgment and personal experience can be included in the process analysis essay. For instance, in an essay on finding a tutor, you could mention how an acquaintance went about it and the challenges he/she faced. Of course, this brings in certain aspects of an evaluation essay because you will also explain to the reader how to judge something.
To maintain readability, it is advised that you decide a paragraph to each step. Sometimes, the steps in this essay are not chronological. For instance an MBA essay on resolving workplace conflicts could suggest different ways of doing so rather than a step-by-step plan. Yet, there should be clarity on which step can be used in what context such as dealing with a work-shirker versus dealing with a rumor-monger.
